Today I am so lucky to spotlight another amazing vendor I have had the privilege of working with multiple times Little Acre Flowers. One thing I absolutely love about about Little Acre Flowers is that they purchases flowers from growers throughout the DC/MD/VA region they try to get flowers from from as close to DC as possible to offer the freshest possible flowers to their customers. Today’s interview is with Owner and CEO Amber Flack.
How did you get started in your business?
I joined Little Acre Flowers as General Manager about five years ago, taking a leap from a career in the tech startup world to follow my passion for flowers, and was so excited to jump into a role where I could use both sides of my brain and marry my logistical / managerial brain with my creative pursuits. I was inspired by the company’s gorgeous garden-inspired aesthetic, commitment to sustainability, and women-empowered mindset. I became the owner of the business this year. It’s been the best life transition!
What’s your favorite part of your involvement with events?
We love bringing the local flower aesthetic to someone’s big day. It’s such a special way to really be present in a moment in time, so when those same flowers start blooming again the next year, and the year after, they’re reminded of that special moment in their lives. My team truly goes above and beyond with their event designs and support, and it really never gets old when we’ve blown away a client’s expectations. We love seeing it all come together!
What sets your business apart from others in your industry?
Little Acre Flowers is DC’s only 100% locally sourcing florist — that means that we’re using flowers that have been grown and harvested from as close by as possible. It’s a very tricky business model as we’re very reliant on what Mother Nature wants to do, but we’re committed to sustainability, supporting our local growers, and bringing seasonal designs to our clients. We don’t rely on imported flowers (which are coated in chemicals that are terrible for the environment and our bodies, and have been shipped from thousands of miles away) to achieve our design goals; rather, our designs reflect the season outside our window. You’re never going to find an imported red rose in our bouquets, but you are going to find some of the most special and unique varieties in our designs, possibly things you’ve never seen! Our blooms are fresher, last longer, smell better, and are a more eco-conscious choice, in addition to supporting the local economy.
Do you have a favorite event that you’ve done or a favorite theme?
I feel like every event becomes our favorite! We love any event where the client is really open to us using whatever looks the best for that given moment in time, and any time where we can really go wild with color. Nature makes it easy for us!
What is your favorite event trend right now?
Color, color, and more color!
What is your best piece of advice for people planning an event?
Trust your vendors! Your florist is going to know what’s going to work the best to achieve your event vibe. The more trust you place in your vendors to be creative and empower them to make the best selection for you, the better the end result is going to be – every single time.
What questions should potential customers ask someone in your field?
More than anything, I would make sure your floral vendor aligns with your values and what’s most important to you to achieve your event aesthetic. Review their design portfolio on their website or take a look at their Instagram to see what kind of work they’ve done in the past. If you care deeply for the environment, choose a florist that doesn’t use a lot of imported flowers. If you’re looking for designs that are really organic and wild looking, you might want to avoid using a florist who has lots of photos of really round designs with little variety in them. If you really want intricate floral installations at your event (things hanging from the ceiling, freestanding structures, etc.), make sure your florist has experience doing that before booking with them. And if you’re not sure, just ask!
