Planning the Perfect Minecraft Birthday Bash

While I spend most of my day’s creating amazing events for my wedding and mitzvah clients or designing event related items I sell HERE and in my Etsy Shop I also am a mom to two young boys.  And as an event planner mom I am also tasked with planning their birthday parties every year.  While the appeal of a birthday party at a venue like an arcade or bowling alley is extremely appealing (let’s face it, it is soooooo much less work) if you have a mom who is an event planner why wouldn’t you just have her plan you the perfect birthday party right at your house? So here I am to tell you how I planned my 9-year-old’s Minecraft themed birthday party to make it step by step and easier for you to do as well!

This guide will help you transform your event space/basement/backyard/park into a pixelated paradise, complete with fun activities and delicious treats. Let’s dive into the details of planning the ultimate Minecraft birthday party shall we!

Note: I might earn a small commission if you click on a link and buy something, but it doesn’t cost you anything extra!

Minecraft Party Decorations

Below are some of the items I made or purchased for my Minecraft party decor and  tips on how you can recreate or get them for yourself!

Creeper Corner: These adorable homemade Minecraft Creepers were made using leftover boxes I had laying around the house, white butcher paper, bright green plastic tablecloth, black construction paper, packing tape, scissors and glue.  These creepers also served two purposes.  They were used for target practice during one of our party events, more on that later.  And they were used as decor around the event space.  To make the Creepers I covered each section of the box in the butcher paper so that you can’t see the boxes writing through the green construction tablecloth.  I then covered each section in the table cloth and taped it together.  Then I stacked them up connected them with the packing tape.  Cut out the faces and feet free hand and glued them onto the Creepers. My kids loved helping in the process.

Pixelated Tablecloths: I used this Minecraft themed tablecloth to decorate our indoor food table.

Minecraft Happy Birthday Sign: I created Minecraft Happy Birthday Letters in Canva and then printed them and cut them out to make the Minecraft sign you see on the window in the image below.

Minecraft-themed Decor hand me downs: Don’t be afraid to ask neighbors and friends for their old decor! I got some party decor from another mom on my local buy nothing group.  How often have you kept old themed birthday decor from a party that is perfectly good and can be handed off to someone else?  Ask around and see what you can find.  Save your cash for something else for the party.

The End:  For the room that we had the end.  I created an end portal.  By using a black garbage bag for the center and then I found what an end portal block and created my own and printed a bunch of those out to create a portal. I blacked out all the windows in the room using black garbage bags.  And put purple lights all around the room so it looked like the end.  I also made a The End sign.  You can open those files and print them yourself for free! Then I created the Ender Dragon… See Below.

The Ender Dragon: I created my very own ender dragon.  This was used both for decor and for our battle of the Ender Dragon at the end of the party.   To create the ender dragon I covered various sized boxes with black garbage bags.  I cut out pieces of cardboard to form the mouth and wings and also covered those in the garbage bags.  To make the moveable tale I had saved a lot of toilet paper rolls, connected them with a string down the middle and wrapped around and then covered it in more garbage bags.  For his spikes I cut up white card stock and attached it with packing tape. His eyes were made with white card stock and purple paper.  And I painted the white lines on his wings with white paint I had lying around. I lit up behind him and inside his mouth with more purple lights.  And for our last event of the party the attendees all got to beat him up with their Minecraft swords.   If you wanted to you could also fill him with candy and use him as a piñata.

The Nether: For The Nether room I decorated the room in these lava tablecloths and used items around the house to create a floor is lava game. For the portal I made this sign that you can print off yourself and used black and purple streamers for the kids  to walk through.

Minecraft Legos: My son also has a lot of Minecraft lego sets laying around and he wanted to build them all and have them out as decorations during his party.  The other kids loved seeing all the sets!

Minecraft Games and Activities

To keep the kids entertained throughout the party, plan a variety of Minecraft themed games and activities. Here are a few that we did and how I made them happen along with a few other suggestions that weren’t right for our party but might be right for you!

Minecraft Sword Battle: We had the kids all do a giant Minecraft sword battle using these blow up Minecraft swords.  Everyone got to bring home their sword at the end of the event.  Make sure you order more swords than kids because with the intensity of the battle swords can get destroyed!

Enderman Tag: We used these masks and had the some of the kids put the masks and try to catch everyone else in a game of tag.

Destroy the Creeper: For Destroy the Creeper the kids all took turns with the archery set and tried to hit the creepers we made.  See above for creeper creation instructions.

Nether Floor is Lava: For The Nether floor is lava game I decorated the room in these lava tablecloths and used items around the house (I used chairs and our play couch) to create a floor is lava game. I made my room with the lava coming up on the sides. But you could also have it go longer in a bigger space and use these circles to hop across, this would be helpful if you have younger kids at the party or are outside.

Minecraft Building Challenge: I set up a building challenge where kids can use blocks to create their own Minecraft structures. To do this I bought these boxes and covered them using glue with Minecraft block parts I created

The Ender Dragon Battle: For our last event of the party all of the kids entered the end where they had to battle the Ender Dragon using their swords. For how to build your own ender dragon please see above in the decor section.  If you don’t want to make your own ender dragon you can buy a stuffy version, get a piñata version made like this one I found on Etsy, or you could have someone dress up in an ender dragon costume.

The following are other activities we thought about but didn’t do.

Treasure Hunt: Hide Minecraft-themed items around the party area for kids to find.

Minecraft Pixel Art Station: Provide graph paper and colored pencils for kids to create their own pixel art.

Video Game Tournament: Set up a Minecraft gaming station for a friendly competition.

Food and Drinks

For our party we had Minecraft themed snacks and drinks and an ice cream sundae bar, based on my birthday boy’s preferences.  But I will give you some other ideas we didn’t use along with the ones we did.

Potions: My son loves Gatorade so I made these free labels for the 12 oz Gatorade bottles.  He also wanted apple sauce pouches to be potions so I made these labels and glued them onto the Motts apple sauces

Minecraft Themed Food Purchases: I was lucky enough to have some Minecraft themed food available in the shops when it was time for our party.  So I picked up these Minecraft themed gummies and yogurt tubes.

Food Labels: I made these food label tents to go with the Minecraft food treats.

Plates and Napkins: We also had Minecraft themed plates and napkins for everyone to use during the event.

Other food items if you’re looking to add more of a meal or cake to the mix:
